Neste estuário desagua o rio Coura, existindo na confluência entre os dois rios uma área relativamente extensa de caniçal (Phragmites australis) e matas ripícolas. O troço do estuário do rio Minho é caracterizado pela existência de áreas de sapal e de bancos de areia e de vasa, existindo dentro deste troço um gradiente bastante acentuado na salinidade de água. Aí incluem-se diversas ilhas utilizadas para exploração agrícola e pecuária. Mais perto de Valença é ainda incluído neste sítio a veiga de São Pedro da Torre, uma zona húmida palustre com uma mata ripícola bem conservada.

BIRDING AT O GROVE, SPAIN ON 11-2-06

Five keen birdwatchers in 2 cars made the easy drive to O Grove in dry, bright weather on Saturday morning , February 11th to watch birds on the incoming tide.
We were rewarded with the sight of 13 species, all but one not seen on Minho excursions:
Three species of Plover - Golden, stocky & short-billed; Grey, bigger than the former; the Kentish, small & usually freshwater and the Ringed, small, rotund with striking head & breast pattern. There was a lone Little Egret, numerous Dunlin, a small, round-shouldered wader black-legged & billed Sanderling the slim, elegant, needle-billed Spotted Redshank; the stocky, orange-legged Turnstone; up to 5.000 large, tall, long-billed Black-tailed Godwit waders; elegant, long-necked & long-tailed Pintail; colourful, long-billed. round-headed Pochard, a diving duck and up to 1,000 sociable. grey-billed Wigeon.
We discussed birds & birding, etc, while picknicing over lunch os a pristine beach looking out over a calm Atlantic. All in all, an enjoyable & interesting outing, well worth repeating.
