Our Mission
SPEA is an Environmental not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support research and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, by promoting sustainable development for the benefit of future generations.

Administrative Bodies
SPEA is run in accordance to its Charter and Internal Regulations, its General Assembly's deliberations, and any applicable legislation.
SPEA's administrative bodies for 2010-2013 are:

  • General Assembly's Council
The General Assembly's Council is composed of a President, a Vice-President and three Secretaries. The President's job is to summon the General Assembly and preside at its sessions. The current General Assembly's Council has the following members:

Jaime Albino Ramos  | Presidente

Cláudia Serrano | Vice-president
Age 32, Lawyer. A lawyer since 2003, in conjunction with a position as jurist in a bank's litigious department from 2003 to 2006 and as director of the juristic department of a human resources consultancy company from 2006 to 2007. A member of SPEA since 2007.

Alexandre Hespanhol Leitão | Secretary
Passionate about birds and their status and conservation. Professionally, an environment consultant and ornithologist. Degree in Biology. Volunteer collaborator in some of SPEA's projects.

Gonçalo Ventura Martins | Secretário
40 years old, Technical engineer of telecommunications in a multi-national of the same branch, exerting the function of "Technical Writing Specialist". He is a diving instructor and passionate about nature outside and inside water.

Pedro Monteiro | Secretary
Working with SPEA since 2005, promoting and publicizing SPEA's work in Azores (LIFE Azores Bullfinch). Collaborated in the preparation of photographic exhibits in São Miguel (Azores), Lisbon, Brussels (EU Parliament) and the BirdFair – a major birdwatching event. Several photos published in major publications such as the National Geographic. Photographic reporter for the newspaper Jornal dos Açores.

  • Audit Committee
The Audit Committee is charged with overseeing SPEA's financial reporting and disclosure. It issues a review of the Board of Directors' Financial Report and presents it at an Ordinary General Assembly. It is composed of a President, a Secretary and a Financial Controller. The current Audit Committee has the following members:

José Manuel Soares Saldanha de Azevedo | President
Age 53. Degree in Business Management and Organization, ISCTE. Inventory Management certificate, APICS. Began his career at a German company in 1977. Since then, he has been a management consultant, almost exclusively. Worked at Price Waterhouse for 15 non-consecutive years and left for Deloitte & Touche, as a Senior Manager. Worked at Deloitte for 12 years, 10 of which as a business partner, overseeing a vast number of diverse projects. AVIS Rent-a-Car Director of Planning between 1987 and 1989.

Vitor Couto Gonçalves | Secretary
Age 64; Degree in Business Management and Organization, ISCTE; Bank employee from 1971 to 1999 in the area of large projects; Private and public college teacher, since 1982, in the areas of new technologies and management. ESCS national representative for Poliempreende.

Filipe Cansado | Financial Controller
Age 41. Degree in Business Management, Portuguese Catholic University. Specialization training in Management Control, ISCTE. 1991-1996, Financial Auditor at a major multinational corporation. 1996-2002, Management Consultant at two large multinational corporations, with projects focused mostly on Process Reengineering / Reorganization and Financial Modelling and Analysis. 2002-present, Financial Controller at a major Portuguese company of the Automotive Distribution sector. Chartered Accountant.

  • Board of Directors
SPEA's Board of Directors manages the society and is composed of 7 people: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and three other board members. Among other things (see Charter and Internal Regulations), the Board of Directors executes the programme and budget approved by the General Assembly, manages SPEA and presents a report of this activity. The current Board of Directors was elected on 23 March 2013, at a General Assembly, and has the following members:

Maria Clara de Lemos Casanova Ferreira | President
Degree in Business Communication, Postgraduate degree in Marketing Management. Working currently as Project Technician at the Innovation and Business Promotion Centre, overseeing an Interreg project for creative industries in the Atlantic region. SPEA collaborator between 2006 and 2008.

José Manuel Monteiro | Vice-president
Navy Officer, retired at the rank of Captain of Sea and War. Previously a member of several associations, including the Naval Military Club as a director and as president. Currently a member of the April 25th Association as Vice-President of the General Assembly. Participates in some of SPEA's activities, mostly field trips.

Michael Armelin | Treasurer
Born in London, 1940, living in Portugal since 1989. Currently, an industry manager. Amateur ornithologist since age 16 and BTO certified ringer since the 50s. SPEA's founding member.

Vítor Hugo Rodrigues Paiva | Secretário
Philosophy Doctor in Biology, specialty in Ecology by the University of Coimbra and University of Kiel in february 2010. Investigates on the field of the spatial, feeding and trophic ecology of marine and estuarine birds from the Atlantic, Antactic and Indian Ocean and the North and Mediterranean seas, with relevance to the impact of climate change and overfishing on marine biodiversity. Senior researcher at MARE-Marien and Environment Research Centre (University of Coimbra), has participated as scientific consultant on diverse projects from the SPEA marine program (e.g. project LIFE+ Berlengas).

Vanda Coutinho | Board Member

José Paulo Oliveira Monteiro | Board Member
Age 43, Paediatric Neurologist. A member of SPEA since 1997. Attended several of SPEA's training courses and field work since 2000, on the projects Breeding Birds Atlas, Common Bird Census, Arenaria Project and RAM Days.
