SPEA is responsible for implementing the Important Bird Areas Programme (IBA) in Portugal, overseen internationally by BirdLife International. To monitor IBA, we created the IBA Caretakers Network.
The caretaker is the preferred link between SPEA and the IBA, providing information about any matter relating to the IBA, namely threats, and collaborating in SPEA's interventions on that IBA (e.g. bird census, organization of fieldtrips, artificial nests placing).
At present, all around the country, there are still some IBAs without a caretaker, in need of your watchful eye. Pick an IBA and register!
Further information:
- Local: any IBA in mailland Portugal, Azores or Madeira archipelagos.
- Requisites: interest for nature conservation and knowledge about the chosen IBA
- Supervisor: Domingos Leitão, Coordinator of the Conservation Department / Terrestrial Programme
