Lagos schools 1
Name: The Black-winged Stilt in the Paul de Lagos
Partnership: Lagos Municipality and SPEA
Duration: March to June 2003
Participants: 220 students
Place: Paul de Lagos
Description: The Paul de Lagos is a small wetland area located near the town of Lagos.
This project created a fun and constructive opportunity for students from Lagos and nearby to meet the Paul de Lagos's star – the Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus. For any of the participating school classes, the project had two parts: a practical one, composed of two field trips to the Paul, and a theoretical one, composed of three lectures in the schools. Related student and teacher work projects were displayed at the end.
Results presentation: This project's student and teacher work projects were publicly displayed at the Lagos Cultural Centre. This opportunity was used to gather everyone involved and to present the project to technicians from several other municipalities from around the Algarve region, environmental associations, landowners and other interested parties. This presentation was conducted by the students themselves, a novelty at the time for this kind of projects.
