Lagos Schools 3
Name: Dunes – Exploring this frontier
Partnership: Lagos Municipality and SPEA
Collaboration: “A Rocha” Association
Sponsor: Environmental Institute (Instituto do Ambiente)
Duration: April to June 2005
Participants: 231 students
Place: Meia-praia
Description: The Meia-praia dunes are a textbook example of a coastal dune system, forming a natural barrier between the estuary and the bay of Lagos. It is a habitat for many animal and plant species, some of which are endemic. Similar to what happened in most of the Algarve coast, the Meia-praia dunes have been altered, and often destroyed, sometimes by natural phenomena (e.g. erosion) but mostly by human action, such as chaotic urban development, trampling, introduction of invasive species, etc. These and other issues were discussed along three sessions (each school class) by the students involved: one lecture and two field trips to the study site.
Some of this project's interventions were part of a study conducted by the “A Rocha” Association aiming to monitor the breeding of the Little Tern and Kentish Plover and to implement conservation measures for these two species. At the end of the project, the students' families were involved in some activities and the students got an opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge.
