Monitoring Programme
Nocturnal Birds Monitoring Programme in Portugal

The NOCTUA Programme - Portugal started in 2009/10 as a test project, being definitely established in 2010/11.

Goals

The NOCTUA Programme – Portugal establish as main goals:

1) To study species distributions (presence and number of territories);

2) To know variation in spatial distribution;

3) To determine population trends;

4) To analyze relationships between population trends and habitat disturbance.

Ultimately, it is intended the use of nocturnal birds as indicators of the habitats conservation status.

Methodology

Sampling is done based on 10x10 km UTM squares. Each collaborator is responsible for a grid, which should be visited three times a year (one time in winter and 2 in spring), making 5 listening points, lasting 10 minutes each visit. The species to be recorded are all nocturnal raptors (Strigiformes), nightjars (Caprimulgiformes) and stone curlew.

For more information please see the Methodology of Nocturnal Birds Monitoring Programme 2010/11.
