SPEA is an Environmental not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support research and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, by promoting sustainable development for the benefit of future generations.
Several bird census are carried out every year, each with specific goals, to produce biodiversity indicators. These census depend almost entirely on volunteer work.
Results can be used to assess the progression of populations, species and bird communities, the status of their habitats, sites and ecosystems and also to evaluate the results and effects of policies, programmes and projects.
SPEA's data is used in Portugal and worldwide by more than 10 institutions: Portuguese Institute for Statistics, Planning and Policies Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Institute, Portuguese Agency for the Environment, BirdLife International, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), EuroStat, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme, Wetlands International and the European Commission's Ornis Committee.
