LIFE MarPro
MarPro (Conservation of marine protected species in Mainland Portugal) is a LIFE+ funded project which started in January 2011 and will last until December 2015. This project is a partnership between the University of Aveiro (coordinating partner), IPIMAR (Portuguese fisheries institute), University of Minho, SPEA and ICNB. MarPro aims to reduce the conflicts between fisheries and cetacean and seabird species by implementing solutions concerning by-catch and fish depredation, as well as understanding the complex relations between the exploitation of pelagic fishes and the conservation of protected species. Another important goal is to ensure the long-term socio-economic viability of the management, surveillance and monitoring activities of the target species and their habitats, together with the promotion of a sustainable exploitation of marine fishery resources of Mainland Portugal.
