Marine Ecosystem Services

Lead by SPEA – in partnership with the coastal action groups of Aveiro GAC-RA) and Oeste (represented by Adepe) – the project ‘Assessment of marine ecosystem services in marine protected areas – two case studies on the central coast of Portugal’ is financed by the Gulbenkian Oceans Initiative (GOI). It is a one year project, started in December 2014, which aims to demonstrate the relevance and potential inherent to the designation and extension of Portuguese marine protected areas (MPA) network. With a strong focus on stakeholders engagement, it specifically intend to evaluate the economic benefits and the costs of implementing or not MPA and the associated conservation measures.

It is mainly a comparative case study between: Berlengas Islands Special Protection Area (SPA) and the area bounded on the north by recently designated SPA Aveiro-Nazaré and on the south by the GAC-RA intervention area.
