Gulbenkian Oceans Initiative

The Gulbenkian Oceans Initiative (GOI) is a Gulbenkian Foundation Programme which aims to support the economic valuation of marine ecosystem services. It is framed by a vision of ‘protection, conservation and good management of the oceans and of marine ecosystems’. With a time frame from 2013 to 2018, it promotes activities in three domains - research, public understanding and policy actions - towards the increasing of ‘public and political understanding of marine ecosystem services as strategic assets for sustainable economic development and for human well-being’.

In the research domain, GOI is financing an interdisciplinary research entitled ‘The Economic Valuation and Governance of Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services’. Focused on the Portuguese context, it’s coordinated by Antonieta Cunha e Sá (Nova School of Business and Economics) and Henrique Queiroga, CESAM researcher and biology Department professor (Aveiro University)

Regarding the policy actions domain, IGO has been supporting several projects, between those, two - although with different objectives - are crossed partially in space and time: (i) Evaluation of the potential to development a co-management process of fisheries in Peniche-Nazaré (coordinated by WWF-Portugal); and (ii) Assessment of marine ecosystem services in marine protected areas – two case studies on the central coast of Portugal.

The ‘Assessment of marine ecosystem services in marine protected areas – two case studies on the central coast of Portugal’ project, was the one selected in 2014 to be financed under a joint call for non-governmental organizations and coastal action groups. This project addresses IGO objectives, particularly in its contribution to the integration of the economic value of marine ecosystems services (MES) in the designation and management of marine protected areas (MPA). Furthermore, the project has a strong focus on stakeholders engagement (namely to identify and value MES), as well as, its results will contribute to inform policy makers about the benefits of the implementation and proper management of MPA - which consequently will have a high impact on the conservation of marine resources in Portugal. This information it will also be used to promote MES in MPA internationally.
