Our Mission
SPEA is an Environmental not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support research and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, by promoting sustainable development for the benefit of future generations.

The Project

The ‘Assessment of marine ecosystem services in marine protected areas – two case studies on the central coast of Portugal’ project main goal is to promote marine ecosystem services (MES) value in marine protected areas (MPA), to underpin the importance of the designation of these areas and the extension of Portuguese MPA currently existing network. Framed by a strong stakeholder engagement focus, it specifically intend to evaluate the economic benefits and the costs of implementing or not MPA and the associated conservation measures.It is mainly a comparative case study research, with two case studies: Berlengas Islands Special Protection Area (SPA) and the area bounded on the north by the recently designated SPA Aveiro-Nazaré and on the south by the GAC-RA intervention area. (Figure 1).

Specifically, the project aims to:

1)   Identify and characterize the most relevant MES in the study areas;

2)   Engage local stakeholders in the identification and valuation of MES;

3)   Quantify the socioeconomic benefits of designating and managing MPA, as well as, the costs of the associated management measures;

4)   Define a methodology for assessing the socio-economic benefits of MPA in Portugal, which can be useful and replicable in the future.
