On our most recent trip to Santa Luzia island (Cape Verde), the number of Raso Larks was far greater than we’d expected! Over the 10 days our team monitored the population of Raso Larks on the island, we found:

  • at least 50 birds
  • 9 nests, with a total of 10 chicks and 4 eggs
  • individuals hatched last November feeding new chicks, suggesting that 3 month-old birds are already involved in breeding duties

Also encouraging was the fact that we found no signs of feral cats – an invasive predator that could be a major threat to the Raso Lark.

Together with our partners from Biosfera Cabo Verde, we aim to continue to monitor the population twice a year; hopefully we will continue to find signs of success with each trip!
